Are organic cloth diapers really that important? Of course, you have to pick and choose your battles. For us, it was/is very important, at least while our daughter was an infant. We made it a point to use organic diapers and clothing for our daughter in her first 6 months to a year.
Skin Is The First Defense
Our skin is the first immune defense for our bodies. If skin is constantly bombarded with chemicals, toxins and pollutants, it will absorb those things and/or break down itself. What is absorbed through the skin is delivered to the rest of our organs.
A baby’s skin is even more sensitive, and their immune systems are far less developed than ours. Those early months and years are critical for fostering a strong immune system, especially in light of the fact that there are so many more chemicals and toxins in the air and in all sorts of products, from diapers to furniture.
Organic Everything
These days, everyone has organic products. Perhaps it is just smart marketing and positioning for many companies. Still, it’s a good thing when even disposable diapers come in organic (I find organic disposables to be an oxymoron, and pretty much antithetical to a real organic movement, but that’s another topic altogether). The fact is, natural diapers on your baby are just plain healthier.
Gerber – Cheap Organic Cloth Diapers
Gerber makes cheap organic cloth diapers. You can get a Gerber Brand 6 Pack Prefold Birdseye Organic Diaper, White for just $10.54. T
hey are made of 100% certified organic cotton. The weave of these diapers makes them soft and quick-drying. The 3-ply center panel, while not the thickest of the lot, certainly makes these diapers absorbent for the price.
Best In Organic
What are the best organic cloth diapers? Well, as always, this is subjective. For prefolds, we really loved the Cloth-Eez 100% organic Indian Cotton. We stuck with these for a while. But now you can find all kinds of organic diapers–pocket diapers, fitteds, etc.
Whether you are looking for organic cotton cloth diapers, or organic hemp cloth diapers, you can rest assured that those diapers won’t have any pesticides lingering in them.
While organic prefolds are the least expensive option, you can also find All In Ones to be pretty reasonable. For example, you can get a BumGenius! Organic Diaper.
Hemp Vs. Cotton
Really, the question of whether hemp cloth diapers are better than cotton comes down to 3 things: whether you are cloth diapering for the environment’s sake; whether you are cloth diapering for your baby’s health; whether you are cloth diapering to save money.
Environment: 50% of the world’s pesticides are sprayed on cotton! Cotton also goes throug a bleaching process that is harmful to many environmental systems.
Hemp is hearty. Not only does hemp have tons of uses, the entire hemp plant can be used. Furthermore, no pesticides are needed to grow hemp, because it is so hearty. Hemp also does not deplete the soil. It is truly organic growing.
Health: Indeed, hemp is antimicrobial, which cotton is not. So, hemp is more healthy-friendly for your baby. Hemp also breathes better than cotton because it is more porous.
Money: Hemp is 8 times stronger than cotton in terms of tensile strength, and four times as durable. Diapers made of hemp will, simply put, last longer. So, you will save money (not buying more diapers to replace your worn out ones).
