Pocket Diaper Comparison: BumGenius Vs. Fuzzibunz

Are you trying to figure out what brand of pocket diaper to use for your baby?  I have found two pocket diapers to be tops in my book: BumGenius 4.0 and FuzziBunz One Size.  I think both trump Happy Heineys by comparison.  Okay, onto the comparison…

Similarities

Okay, first of all, how are these two well known names in cloth diapers similar?  Of course, both are pocket diapers, so they both:

  • have a great waterproof outer layer.
  • have a liner that wicks moisture (read: pee) away from your baby’s skin and into the absorbing insert.
  • have a conveniently placed pocket opening.
  • come with an included  absorbent insert
  • have durable snaps.

Differences

LINING: FuzziBunzuses a fleece interior.  BumGenius uses a microfiber interior.  The fleece tends to be softer, so perhaps Fuzzibunz has a leg-up in this category.

INSERT ADJUSTABILITY: Bum Geniusinserts snap to change size.  Fuzzibunz is a one size insert.  While it may seem convenient to have an adjustable insert, most people say it doesn’t make or break the deal.  It’s a draw in this category.

FASTENERS: BumGenius uses Velcro at the waist.  However, you can get BumGenius with snaps only.  They are very durable.   Fuzzibunz only uses snaps.  The velcro is said by many to wear out through washes over time.  However, the 4.0 has improved the Velcro quality over the 3.0.  Still, I would vote snaps over Velcro for durability.  Also, babies can unfasten Velcro much easier than snaps.  My daughter started doing this and it was hilarious, and also a bit annoying.   If you want Velcro, BumGenius it is.  For snaps, we have another draw.

FIT: BumGenius tends to be more bulky than the Fuzzibunz.  However, many users say that the BumGenius are bulkier when their baby was smaller.  As they grow into them bulk doesn’t seem to be an issue.  Honestly, this sounds like the description of many cloth diapers I have used.  Also, all babies are different sizes and shapes.  Your baby’s shape and size at age 1 will be far different than at age 2, or even 1 1/2.  So there is no definitive answer here.  Draw.

PRICE: The two seem to be similarly priced, depending on where you are purchasing.   BumGenius are less expensive in a few places.  BumGenius also offers a discount when buying.  Fuzzibunz does not.

EASE OF USE: Although both are very easy to use, the BumGenius opening is superior to the Fuzzibunz opening, because it has an extra flap to the system that keep the pocket closed better.

LEAKS: As both diapers are very adjustable, they are top notch for containing leaks.  Fuzzibunz does have adjustable elastic, which may be a plus.

Conclusion

Both of these diapers have their strong and weaker points.   BumGenius Reviews are likely to suggest price as the best point for these.  And you will still be getting a very high quality diaper.  If you’re willing to spend a little more cash, then Fuzzibunz is probably the one to go with.  Ultimately, you will have to decide.  You may try buying a few of each, comparing for yourself (as every baby is shaped differently).  That’s what we have done with all of our diaper systems.
